You’re Closer than You Think: A Story of Focus, Motivation, Perseverance, Inspiration

In honor of Women’s History Month in March, I share the inspiring story of Florence Chadwick. 1952, Florence Chadwick decided to attempt the 26-mile swim between the California coastline and Catalina Island. Roughly 15 hours into her swim, a thick fog began to set in, clouding Chadwick’s vision and confidence. She swam for another hour before deciding to call it quits. Sitting in the boat, she discovered that if she’d continued for another mile, she would have reached Catalina Island. Two months after, she tried the swim once more. Once again, a thick fog set in. But this time, she had a mental image of the shoreline as she pushed herself along. She broke the men’s record by two hours.

Many people quit a dream on the brink of its realization. “All I could see was the fog.… I think if I could have seen the shore, I would have made it.”–Florence Chadwick.

We live in a fog of trouble, worry, doubt, depression, health problems, financial uncertainty, strained relationships, and the loss of loved ones. We focus on the fog because we can’t see the shore. Sometimes we feel like giving up because we no longer have the strength to stay afloat. When the challenges feel the most daunting, we’re often closer to our destination than we think ourselves to be. If we can paddle through a bit of fog, we’ll discover that haze eventually gives way to a sense of clarity and self-belief. Keeping your poise is essential and will enable you to navigate adeptly through moments of uncertainty. Credit: Nick Maccarone and Wikipedia.

And finally, wishing a Happy St Patrick’s Day to all who celebrate. Wherever you go and whatever you do, may St. Patrick’s Day bring luck to you!
