Urgent Health Advisory: Risks of Counterfeit Botulinum Toxin Injections

The New York State Department of Health has issued an urgent health advisory following reports of 22 adverse incidents across 11 states from botulinum toxin injections using counterfeit products or administered by untrained personnel in non-medical settings. These mishandled injections have led to severe health risks, including symptoms resembling early-stage botulism. Healthcare providers are urged to screen for adverse effects in patients presenting with localized paralysis and report suspected botulism cases within 24 hours. The advisory emphasizes the importance of using only FDA-approved botulinum toxin products and administering them in licensed healthcare facilities.
