New York Ranks 39th for Healthcare: What the Data Means for Physicians

New York has one of the strongest physician workforces in the country, ranking 3rd nationally for physicians per capita and 3rd for insured children.
But the state ranked only 39th overall for healthcare. High insurance costs, gaps in routine care, dental access challenges, and middling resident retention continue to weigh down New York’s performance.
For physicians, the message is clear: access to care depends on more than the number of doctors. It also requires affordability, a sustainable practice environment, and policies that help retain the next generation of physicians.
MSSNY continues to advocate for New York physicians and patients by pushing for policies that reduce administrative burdens, protect physician-led care, and make New York a stronger place to practice medicine.
