Dr. Brian White Returns to National Cycling Podium

Brian F. White, DO, a MSSNY member since 2009 and Chief of Interventional Pain Management at Bassett Healthcare Network, continues to demonstrate commitment both in medicine and in elite cycling.
Dr. White recently finished fourth at the USA Cycling National Championship Masters Road Race in Fall River, Wisconsin. The 55-mile race was held on a rolling 11-mile course under hot and windy conditions, testing both endurance and race strategy.
Early in the race, Dr. White joined a four-rider breakaway that built nearly a one-minute lead before being caught by the field around the 30-mile mark. Later, after another breakaway formed ahead, Dr. White launched a solo attack with approximately eight miles remaining and fought to build a 30-second gap over the pursuing field.
Reflecting on the effort, Dr. White said, “Those last 8 miles were hard, really hard; this is the hardest fight I can ever remember for a 4th place finish.” He added that after the early breakaway was caught, “I wasn’t convinced I had another deep effort left in me,” but decided to attack on the final lap as the course entered the climbs.
His result follows a strong return to competitive cycling after more than two decades away from the sport. In a previous MSSNY Member Spotlight, Dr. White reflected on stepping away from cycling during medical school and training, then rediscovering the sport as a way to reconnect with discipline, health, and personal purpose.
That message remains relevant for physicians across New York. Dr. White’s story is not only about athletic performance; it is about longevity, self-care, and the importance of maintaining identity beyond professional demands.
