Physician Burnout Declines, But Challenges Remain
Physician burnout, a long-standing issue, reached a record high of 62.8% in 2021. However, recent AMA survey data shows a decline, with burnout falling below 50% for the first time since 2020. This progress is encouraging, but the fight against burnout continues as the AMA focuses on reducing administrative burdens and providing solutions to help doctors rediscover the Joy in Medicine™.
The AMA’s 2023 national physician comparison report, based on over 12,400 responses, highlights trends in job satisfaction, job stress, burnout, and feeling valued by their organization. Job satisfaction rose to 72.1%, and fewer physicians reported job stress, down to 50.7%. 50.4% of physicians feel valued by their organizations, up from 46.3% in 2022.
Continued efforts to address these issues are crucial, as burnout still costs the U.S. healthcare system billions annually.
