NYU Langone Kidney Program Raises Concerns about SUNY Downstate
The Public Health and Health Planning Council has approved NYU Langone Health’s plan to open a kidney transplant program in Brooklyn to make services more accessible in the borough, which has the highest rate of patients who are on chronic dialysis, raising concerns about the future of SUNY Downstate Medical Center’s transplant services. MSSNY member Dr. Donald Moore, a former member of the Downstate Community Advisory Board, said NYU Langone’s program will pull patients from SUNY Downstate, which has had the only kidney transplant program in the borough and is struggling financially, as patients increasingly seek care at larger health systems.
