Choi, MD, FAAOS, a board-certified orthopaedic spine surgeon and MSSNY member, who recently became the first physician to implant the Barricaid® Annular Closure Device using an endoscopic approach. The procedure, performed at Gramercy Surgery Center in New York using Amplify Surgical’s dualPortal® system, represents a significant advancement in minimally invasive spine surgery.
Dr. Choi emphasized the clinical value of the innovation, noting that “this novel endoscopic approach enabled direct visualization during the discectomy and implantation of Barricaid,” and hailed it as “the next advancement in patient care.” With over 12,000 prior Barricaid uses, this marks the first time the device has been successfully integrated with an endoscopic technique, offering the potential to reduce re-herniation and re-operation rates by up to 81% for patients with significant annular defects.
