Building Meaningful Relationships with Legislators Benefits Physicians and Our Patients
Colleagues:
I recently attended a reception for State Senator Robert Ortt along with representatives from Erie County Medical Society (MSCE), including MSCE Executive Director of MSCE Kathy Van De Loo, MSSNY’s Associate Legislative Counsel Oksana Golovina, and several engaged medical students.
Hosted by MSCE and MSSNY, the reception took place in Lewiston, New York, near one of the natural wonders of the world, Niagara Falls. It was a beautiful day, filled with sunlight, fresh air, good food, and a strong sense of camaraderie.
MSCE President Dr. Terranova and I offered brief remarks and introductions before Senator Ortt spoke. He discussed the current legislative landscape in Albany, noting that much remains in flux pending the state budget’s debate and passage. Importantly, he took time to address generally many of the issues critical to our profession, including medical liability costs, ensuring physician-led team care, corporate practice of medicine, challenges with dispute resolution, and the growing administrative burdens imposed by insurance companies. He demonstrated a clear understanding of several concerns and, where clarification was needed, expressed a willingness to look further into the issues and follow up. Throughout, he was open, candid, and highly approachable.
Following the formal remarks, the atmosphere remained relaxed and collegial as attendees mingled, exchanged ideas, and built connections. The presence of medical students added an encouraging dimension, highlighting the future of our profession and reinforcing the importance of engagement across generations.
This is one of many events supported by your MSSNYPAC supporting candidates on various sides of the political aisle. Events like this offer a unique and valuable opportunity to build meaningful relationships with our legislators. While meetings in Albany or district offices are essential, informal gatherings such as this can foster more personal and productive dialogue.
I left the reception feeling that a genuine, mutual connection had been established with Senator Ortt, one that can serve as a foundation for ongoing collaboration. Building trust and maintaining these relationships are critical to advancing our legislative priorities and ultimately benefiting both physicians and our patients.
I encourage all of you to take advantage of opportunities to engage with your legislators, whether in Albany, locally, or at events like this. If you are unable to attend in person, you can still support our advocacy efforts through contributions to MSSNYPAC. Every contribution, regardless of size, helps strengthen our voice and advances the mission of our society.
All the best,
Mark J. Adams, MD, MBA, FACR
MSSNY President
