Hochul Continues to Weigh Grieving Families Act

The Grieving Families Act, which would allow families to sue for emotional damages in wrongful death cases, is before Gov. Kathy Hochul for the third consecutive year, and she has not indicated whether she would sign the measure. The Medical Society of the State of New York and other groups urged Hochul in a letter sent in October to veto the bill, noting that health care and other sectors would be “be saddled with enormous new costs” and that the “legislation that will dramatically alter the liability environment in New York, putting the state out of line with the rest of the nation.”
