Life is Like a Roll of Toilet Paper
Colleagues:
Andy Rooney once wrote, “life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.” As a Gastroenterologist, I have always appreciated the GI aspect of this aphorism. As your President, I have come to recognize another facet of this wisdom diamond. My year as President will end during the first weekend of April, and as we enter 2025, that date is approaching ever faster.
Last year was a whirlwind of events that culminated in both the Governor’s veto of the Grieving Families Act, and Congress’s failure to fix Medicare payment cuts. In that sense, it was both the best of times and the worst of times.
Looking to the future, I am planning to attend the AMA’s State Advocacy Meeting on January 9 in California, where I hope to muster AMA support for our NY state initiatives.
On February 10 through 12, the AMA’s National Advocacy Conference (the “NAC”) will be meeting in Washington DC. You are all invited, and we hope to make a big impression when we converge on the steps of the Capital to lobby for definitive Medicare payment reform.
To summarize, our political fights are far from over. Given the puny size of MSSNYPAC funds, we really punched above our weight this year. Your medical society, your staff, and your leadership need your support of the PAC. To donate, click here.
Here’s Auld Lang Syne to the old year and looking forward to the coming maelstrom of 2025 as my year as President rushes to its close.
All the best,
Jerome C. Cohen, MD
MSSNY President
