Physicians Advocate for Their Patients and Profession

Colleagues:

We had a great Physician Advocacy Day in Albany on Tuesday. I was so pleased to welcome 150 physicians and physician advocates to our program—which marked the first time we have had the opportunity to meet in person since the pandemic. It was wonderful to see so many engaged MSSNY members who took the time away from their busy practices to come to Albany to advocate with their Senators and Assemblymembers on the many legislative issues that are important to all of us to help maintain patient access to community-based physician care.  Tuesday’s timing was fortuitous, as both Houses were finalizing their respective one-House Budget proposals that set the stage for 3-way negotiations with the Governor.

We had great discussions with the key healthcare policymakers who addressed us in the morning program before we moved on to legislative visits with our individual legislators in the afternoon.  We were joined by NYS Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald, Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris, Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt, Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay, Senate Insurance Committee Chair Neil Breslin, Senate Health Committee Chair Gustavo Rivera, Assembly Health Committee Chair Amy Paulin, and Assembly Insurance Committee Chair David Weprin.

While we were all in Albany, we took the opportunity to honor Senator Breslin—who is retiring after this legislative session—for his extraordinary record of achievement in championing legislation that helps protect patients’ ability to receive needed treatment and medications.

Thank you again to the many MSSNY members who joined us on Tuesday. I hope even more plan to join us in Albany in the future to make our voices heard on behalf of our patients and our profession.
