Performance of ChatGPT on USMLE: Potential for AI-Assisted Medical Education Using Large Language Models
Researchers have tested ChatGPT on the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), a three-part exam required for medical licensure in the U.S. by all medical school graduates. They found that ChatGPT performed near or at the passing threshold for the three exams from the June 2022 sample exam of 305 questions and demonstrated high levels of consistency and insight in its explanations. There is potential for ChatGPT to generate novel insights that can assist human learners in a medical education setting. Researchers found that ChatGPT responses were highly concordant, such that a human learner could easily follow the internal language, logic, and directionality of relationships within the explanation text.
