NY Physicians Weigh in On Gov’s State of the State Message

Statement attributable to:
Jerome Cohen, MD
President, Medical Society of the State of New York

“We appreciate Governor Hochul’s focus in her State of the State message on expanding the ability of New Yorkers to receive needed care, including enhancing outdated health plan network adequacy standards that often cause limited care and treatment options for our patients, and providing stronger incentives for our physicians to participate in the often-cumbersome Workers’ Compensation program.

“However, as we work to enhance access, we also need to ensure we protect the ability of patients to receive quality care.  In this regard, we remain significantly concerned with some of the proposals announced today, including proposals that would appear to eliminate the important oversight physicians provide over the care provided by physician assistants, and to remove the important oversight provided by county medical societies provide in recommending physicians for participation in the Workers’ Compensation program.

“We look forward to working with the Governor and the Legislature on how best we can ensure our patients have access to needed care in a timely manner from the physician of their choice at a time when there remain significant barriers to practicing medicine in New York State.”
