Match Day 2024: Record Number of Applicants, Residency Positions

In a landmark moment for medical education, the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) celebrated its largest Main Residency Match in 72 years on Match Day 2024, setting a new record with 44,853 applicants and 41,503 positions across 6,395 programs. This year’s Match Day saw an all-time high in applicants, registering a 4.7% increase from the previous year, significantly by international medical graduates and osteopathic seniors.

Nearly 45,000 applicants certified their training preferences, leading to an 80.2% match rate for first-year positions. The NRMP’s success reflects the adaptability and resilience of medical students, many of whom commenced their studies just as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded. The 2024 Match also spotlighted the growing importance of primary care, with a record 19,423 positions offered despite a slight dip in the fill rate for pediatrics. Emergency medicine saw a resurgence, nearly returning to its pre-pandemic fill rate. The medical community’s commitment to expanding and adapting the physician workforce to meet future challenges was evident, promising a healthier future underpinned by a robust and diverse cadre of new doctors.
