William Latreille, MD Wins Henry I. Fineberg Award
MSSNY is the State’s Primary Professional Organization for Physicians
Westbury, NY—April 10, 2025 – On the evening of April 6, 2025, at the Medical Society of the State of New York’s annual House of Delegates, the Fineberg Award—MSSNY’s most prestigious award—was presented to William R Latreille MD FACP for distinguished service to his profession and to the Medical Society of the State of New York.
In 1960, MSSNY established the Henry I. Fineberg Award honoring his many years of distinguished service to the State Medical Society. Dr. Fineberg served as MSSNY’s Executive Vice-President from 1961-1982 and helped to create the Physician owned Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company (MLMIC) in response to the malpractice insurance crisis of the 1970s. He served as MSSNY’s president in 1974-1975. This award is presented to one individual annually.
Dr. Latreille became a delegate to MSSNY in 1993 and served as the President of the 4th District for 4 years before becoming the 4th District Councilor, a position that he held for 8 years. In 2012, he was appointed to the MSSNY Board of Trustees and served as Board Chair from 2015-2016. He was elected to the office of Vice-Speaker in 2016, a position that he held until 2020 and was elected as Speaker of the House for a 5-year term ending in 2024. He also created and has chaired the III/IV District Retreat held annually in January in Lake Placid, N.Y. The 26th meeting was held in January 2025.
Dr. Latreille is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and has practiced his Specialty in Malone, N.Y. since 1980 as well as at the Saint Regis Mohawk Health Center in Hogansburg (Akwesasne), N.Y. since 1982. He served many years as the Director of Outpatient Medical Practice at Alice Hyde Medical Center and as Chief Medical Officer for several years before the Hospital became a part of the University of Vermont Health Network. Dr. Latreille is a graduate of LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. and earned his Medical Degree at Upstate Medical Center, also in Syracuse. He completed 2 years of Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. and finished his training at the Robert Packer Hospital/Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, Pa.
In addition to his service to the MSSNY, Dr. Latreille has been a long-term member of the AMA and has been a member of the AMA Delegation from New York for 14 years. He is also a member and Past President of the Franklin County Medical Society and has been the School Physician at his Alma Mater, the Salmon River Central School in Fort Covington, N.Y. for over 25 years. He is an Aviation Medical Examiner as well.
