Existence of Valuable Physician Health Program in Jeopardy Due to Budget Dispute

New York Physicians Call on Policymakers to Restore Funding for Committee for Physician Health

Statement attributable to:
Jerome Cohen, MD
President
Medical Society of the State of New York

“Physicians in New York are rightfully flabbergasted by the reluctance of the Governor and the New York State Legislature to agree on funding to maintain the existence of the invaluable Committee for Physician Health (CPH) program. This program has assisted thousands of physicians over several decades confront addiction and behavioral health challenges and return them to medical practice if and when they are healthy.

“CPH has worked closely with the New York State Department of Health in its efforts to protect the public and has been a universally well-regarded program by medical schools and hospitals across the state in facilitating the delivery of needed treatment services.  At a time when we are facing an epidemic of healthcare worker burnout, it is mind-boggling that this less than $1 million program cost would be eliminated or slashed by policymakers in a $237 billion budget.“
