Navigating growing workforce challenges, increasing administrative burdens, and the responsibility of training the next generation; physician leadership remains essential to the future of healthcare. MSSNY member Dr. Joon K. Shim is demonstrating that impact on a national level through four newly appointed leadership roles focused on surgical education and physician development.

Dr. Shim, Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at Bassett Healthcare Network, has recently been appointed or elected to leadership positions with four prominent national surgical organizations. She will serve on the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Medical Student Education, helping strengthen surgical education across all four years of medical school and improve the transition from medical school to residency training.

In addition, Dr. Shim has been elected as a director-at-large for the Association for Academic Surgery Foundation, appointed as a member-at-large for the Association for Surgical Education, and selected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery. Together, these roles place her at the forefront of conversations shaping surgical education, residency training, leadership development, and mentorship nationwide.

Dr. Shim noted that these opportunities align closely with her passion for surgical education, mentorship, leadership development, and creating thoughtful training environments for future surgeons. Under her leadership, Bassett Healthcare Network’s General Surgery Residency Program has continued to build its reputation as a premier rural surgery training program. This year also marked a significant milestone, with female residents outnumbering male residents in the program for the first time in its history.

A fellowship-trained surgeon specializing in minimally invasive, foregut, metabolic, and general surgery, Dr. Shim is also a United States Army veteran who led surgical teams during two deployments to Afghanistan. Her commitment to service, education, and physician leadership reflects the values that strengthen both the profession and the communities physicians serve.

MSSNY congratulates Dr. Shim on these outstanding achievements and celebrates her continued commitment to advancing surgical education and physician leadership. Her accomplishments demonstrate the important role New York physicians play in shaping healthcare locally, statewide, and nationally.
