Governor Hochul Signs Safe Firearm Storage Legislation Into Law
A measure aimed at promoting safe firearm storage across New York State was signed into law by Governor Hochul this week. Sponsored by Assemblymember Michael Benedetto and Senator Sherry Mayer, the goal of this measure is to increase public awareness of gun-safety laws, especially relevant for parents and parental guardians in school districts across the state. The Medical Society of the State of New York recently adopted policy 260.890 at its House of Delegates meeting calling for efforts to promote safe firearm storage.
The Governor’s approval message for this bill notes that she and the Legislature have agreed to an amendment to the new law to ensure that the Office of Gun Violence Prevention leads the effort to develop and implement the public awareness campaign, and to delay the effective date of the law.
