Department of Health: Meningococcal Disease Linked to Umrah Travel
The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has issued an advisory regarding recent cases of meningococcal disease linked to Umrah travel to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Since April 2024, 12 cases have been reported in the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. Most cases were caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W, with some strains showing resistance to ciprofloxacin.
Healthcare providers are urged to ensure that all travelers aged one year and older to Hajj or Umrah receive the quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) within the last five years and at least 10 days before arrival. Providers should maintain a heightened awareness of meningococcal disease symptoms in patients with recent travel history to Saudi Arabia and consider using rifampin, ceftriaxone, or azithromycin for chemoprophylaxis instead of ciprofloxacin. Meningococcal disease is reportable within 24 hours to local health departments.
