NY Docs To Gov Hochul: Veto Wrongful Death Bill
Colleagues:
MSSNY is working hard to encourage Governor Hochul to veto the wrongful death bill, which could land on her desk at any time now. We recently sent her a letter detailing the opinion-editorials and letters-to-the-editor by physician leaders from around the state voicing their concerns about the impact of this legislation.
Following is a copy of the correspondence:
Dear Governor Hochul:
As a follow to up to previous communications requesting that you veto legislation (A.6698) that would markedly increase the damages awardable in wrongful death actions, we want to share with you the litany of opinion editorials and letters to the editor from physician leaders in different regions of the state articulating their concerns about the community healthcare impact of this legislation, including those that appeared in the following newspapers:
- Plattsburgh Press-Republican
- Buffalo News
- Syracuse Post-Standard
- Westchester Journal News/USA Today Network
- Rochester Democrat & Chronicle
- New York Daily News
Thank you again for your thoughtful consideration of our concerns regarding the impact to patient access to care in the communities these physicians serve if this bill were to be signed into law without also taking steps to reduce the already exorbitant liability insurance costs incurred by our hospitals and physicians. We again respectfully request that you veto this legislation.
As MSSNY president, I encourage my physician colleagues to ask your medical colleagues, friends, and families to contact the Governor and encourage another veto.

Call the Governor’s office at 518-474-8390 # 3. Then press option 1 to leave a voicemail or option 2 to speak with a staff person in the Governor’s office: “I am Dr. ___ ___ requesting the Governor to Veto the Grieving Families Act.”
