Ugly Effects for New Yorkers in Big Bloated Bill

Statement Attributable to:
David Jakubowicz, MD
MSSNY President

“The budget bill which just passed in the House of Representatives and headed to President Donald Trump’s desk will have devastating effects for maintaining an affordable and sustainable health care system in New York. The Medical Society of the State of New York believes healthcare is a human right, and this requires comprehensive and affordable health insurance along with network adequacy, and timely access to emergency care – especially in rural areas. This bill strips away the safety net from millions of New Yorkers, and more than 12 million nationwide.

“As if this was not bad enough, it furthermore will result in a loss to New York of $13.5 Billion in funding a year and INCREASE administrative costs to the state by at least 20% due to work requirements and other verifications built into the bill. Lost funding, more uninsured and uncompensated care, poorer management of chronic disease AND increased unfunded mandates – the cruel consequences of this Frankenstein bill.

“MSSNY stands committed to working with the Governor and our legislators to minimize the impact on the citizens of New York. Unfortunately, this bill creates a large hole in our budget to be backfilled. Our elected leaders need to prioritize patient access and quality care by maintaining the viability of independent physician practices, which have remained the lowest cost providers.

“This was a July 4th gift that no one needed, and we applaud those who voted against this legislation.”
