A recent AMA survey reveals that over one-third of physicians are considering leaving or reducing their work hours, with younger and midcareer doctors significantly affected. The survey, part of the AMA Organizational Biopsy, gathered over 12,400 responses and highlighted six key performance indicators, including job satisfaction, job stress, and burnout.

Key Findings:

  • Intent to Leave: 35.7% of doctors are moderately interested in leaving their current jobs within the next two years, slightly down from 39.3% in 2022.
  • Specialties at Risk: Internal medicine (39.1%), family medicine (37.3%), and obstetrics and gynecology (34%) show the highest intent to leave.
  • Work Hours Reduction: 35.9% of physicians plan to reduce their hours within the next 12 months, a small decrease from 38.1% in 2022.

Efforts like those at Sanford Health are addressing burnout through proactive conversations and individualized support for physicians. Visit the AMA to read more about these findings and solutions.
