Balancing Inpatient and Outpatient Rotations to Combat Burnout
Residency burnout remains a critical issue, with long inpatient hours contributing significantly to fatigue and mental strain. Recent changes in scheduling, such as transitioning from 4-week inpatient and 1-week outpatient rotations (4+1) to 4-week inpatient and 4-week outpatient (4+4), have shown promising results in reducing burnout.
Surveys from the University of Colorado’s Internal Medicine Residency Program indicate improved well-being, job satisfaction, and professional development among residents. These adjustments provide more time for research and recuperation, fostering a healthier work-life balance.
