If You Do X, I’m Going to Quit

Colleagues:

While I continue to be optimistic about what we can achieve as a profession, there is not a single statement that saps my energy more than “If you do x, I’m going to quit MSSNY.” As a democratic organization subject to the votes of our House of Delegates or Council—both of which consist of a broad swath of physicians from across our state with diverse political and ethnic backgrounds—our policy is always decided by the majority, not by the president alone. And while we share many unifying issues, if one disagrees with any of them and wishes to change our policy, one may need to make compromises and build consensus. It may take more work, but I believe it is worth the effort!

An outwardly united society with a strong PAC increases our voice during a time of considerable change on the state and local level. Our society is not distilled down to a position on a single issue, but the will of the House of Delegates on literally thousands of issues based on debate on resolutions brought by you—our members. Disagreements will occur and must be handled amicably and through debate and then a vote. We need to fight to maintain physician-led teams, eliminate onerous prior authorizations and unfair pay recruitment audits, fair physician payments tied to medical inflation, and faith in science and vaccinations. There are difficult fights now and in the future that require all hands on deck—especially yours.

We live in a world where everyone claims to be an expert. As a physician, you are the expert—and we need to fight to maintain that position.

Please renew your membership, give as generously as you can to MSSNYPAC, and engage with your elected representatives wherever and whenever possible.

All the best,

David Jakubowicz, MD, FACS
MSSNY President
