Dr. Louis J. Auguste Receives Anthony Clemendor, MD Health Equity Award
At the 2026 House of Delegates, MSSNY recognized one physician whose decades of service exemplify this commitment by honoring Dr. Louis J. Auguste with the Anthony Clemendor, MD Health Equity Award.
Established in 2023, the Anthony Clemendor, MD Health Equity Award honors physician leaders who work to address disparities in care and promote equitable access to healthcare. Dr. Auguste’s career reflects a sustained dedication to these goals through clinical excellence, community leadership, and humanitarian service.
Dr. Auguste is a surgical oncologist practicing on the north shore of Long Island and serves as a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Zucker Hofstra-Northwell School of Medicine. A graduate of the State University of Haiti School of Medicine, he completed advanced surgical training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Roswell Park Memorial Cancer Institute and later earned a Master of Public Health from Columbia University. Throughout his career, he has contributed to the medical literature with more than 75 peer-reviewed publications, reflecting his commitment to advancing knowledge and improving patient outcomes.
Beyond his clinical and academic work, Dr. Auguste has demonstrated remarkable leadership within organized medicine. Over 37 years of involvement with MSSNY and the American Medical Association, he has served in numerous leadership roles, including President of the Queens County Medical Society and Chair of its Board of Trustees. He currently represents MSSNY as a delegate to the American Medical Association and serves as Vice-Chair of the New York delegation.
Dr. Auguste’s commitment to health equity extends well beyond traditional practice settings. Following the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, he led a team of 107 healthcare professionals to provide urgent medical care in affected communities, an effort that earned him MSSNY President’s Award. More recently, he helped establish the McCune Smith-Cordice Medical Society to support Black physicians, mentor future leaders, and promote health education in underserved communities.
Dr. Auguste’s recognition reflects the strength of physician leadership dedicated to improving care for all patients. MSSNY continues to support physicians who champion equity, mentorship, and community engagement across New York.
