With National Doctors’ Day approaching on March 30, a new report from WalletHub highlights the best and worst states for physicians based on financial success, employment quality, and healthcare infrastructure. The study evaluated all 50 states and Washington, D.C., using 19 key metrics, including physician salaries, hospitals per capita, and malpractice liability costs.

While New York ranked 43rd overall, there are notable positives for physicians practicing in the state:

19th in Average Monthly Starting Salary (adjusted for cost of living), offering competitive pay for early-career physicians.
28th in Projected Percentage of Population Aged 65 & Older by 2030, signaling a growing demand for medical professionals and long-term career stability.

However, the report also highlighted areas for improvement:

46th in Average Annual Wage of Physicians (adjusted for cost of living)
49th in Hospitals per Capita, impacting healthcare accessibility and physician opportunities.
49th in Projected Physicians per Capita by 2032, underscoring the need to attract and retain medical professionals.
50th in Annual Malpractice Liability Insurance Rates, presenting significant financial challenges for doctors.

With high costs, regulatory burdens, and a growing physician shortage, these rankings emphasize the need for ongoing advocacy to improve physician compensation, reduce liability costs through comprehensive liability reform, and strengthen New York’s healthcare system.

MSSNY remains committed to advocating for policies that support physicians and improve healthcare access across the state.
