
Insurance Barriers Create Challenges for Practices, Patient Care
Independent physician practices face challenges in large part because of barriers imposed by the insurance industry, write Dr. Thomas Lee, executive vice president at the Medical Society of the State of New York, and attorney Victoria Aufiero of the Healthcare Association of New York State. They note that affiliations with health systems have helped keep practices in business as they navigate insurer, reimbursement and regulatory difficulties, and proposals in Gov. Kathy Hochul’s budget to reform prior authorization will help patients get the care they need.
“Health insurers have a responsibility to put patients above shareholder interests. This legislative session, New York legislators should help ensure that happens,” they write.
