New York Delegation Participates in the AMA House of Delegates
The MSSNY delegation attended the AMA Annual Meeting from June 9 to June 13 in Chicago. Under the leadership of Charles Rothberg, MD and Joseph Sellers, MD, 22 MSSNY delegates—along with alternate delegates, specialty delegates from New York and regional medical school delegates—worked together to represent the interests of the New York medical community.
MSSNY had a review team assigned to each of the eight AMA HOD Reference Committees that evaluated the 286 reports and resolutions submitted to the AMA HOD.
Resolutions: There were six resolutions from the MSSNY 2023 HOD that were considered by the AMA:
Resolution 524, supporting access to reproductive health care and resolution 253, supporting appropriate compensation for non-visit care were judged to be consistent with existing AMA policy which was reaffirmed.
Resolution 722, protection for end-of-life care was referred for study based on concerns that states have differing definitions of what constitutes end of life care.
Resolution 321, corporate compliance consolidation, 322, disclosure of CME compliance issues, and 116, Medicare coverage for OTC nicotine replacement medications, were all amended by reference committees and passed the HOD.
MSSNY also co-sponsored resolutions from other states that were supportive of MSSNY policies. Resolution 115, addressing the criminalization of providing medical care, was amended to include a study by the AMA with a report back at the Interim 2023 meeting. Resolution 257, calling for more efforts from the AMA on Medicare payment reform, was combined with two other similar resolutions and a substitute resolution was passed. The importance of this resolution was such that the reference committee report schedule was changed to get the results out to the media earlier in the HOD meeting.
MSSNY also supported several candidates for AMA elections. Dr. Pratistha Koirala , representing the Residents and Fellows section, and Dr. Willie Underwood were reelected to the AMA Board of Trustees. Dr. Underwood was also elected as AMA BOT Chair. Dr. Dan Young was elected to the AMA Council on Education.
