An Update on UHC’s GI Endoscopy Prior Authorization Program

MSSNY and 172 other esteemed organizations expressed concerns regarding United Healthcare’s (UHC) proposed implementation of additional prior authorizations in the GI endoscopy program. We stressed the significant impact such measures would have on our dedicated gastrointestinal physicians and their teams.

In recent developments, UHC has temporarily paused the GI endoscopy prior authorization program and initiated a new Advance Notification Program to collect data. However, we must emphasize that this is not a victory but a temporary stay.

UHC has not abandoned the flawed prior authorization program and has reserved the option to implement it in conjunction with the Gold Card program in 2024. During a UHC/specialty society call in April, it was stated that only 10% of practices are expected to receive a Gold Card, making it unattainable for most individuals. If UHC implements the same flawed prior authorization program alongside the Gold Card program, we anticipate facing the same challenges with UHC this Fall.
