AI Challenges Sonographers in Heart Function Assessment
A recent study in Nature has shown that artificial intelligence (AI) can outperform human experts in interpreting echocardiograms to assess the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). The researchers found that AI was non-inferior and even superior to sonographers in the initial evaluation. AI showed superiority in the proportion of studies substantially corrected after review and the mean absolute difference between the initial and final LVEF assessments. However, the study’s authors emphasize that AI still requires clinician supervision, and the technology should not replace human expertise. The study involved 3,495 echocardiographic studies randomly assigned to either AI or sonographer groups. While the study has limitations, it is a positive step toward generalizing AI in cardiology.
