MSSNY Presses New York Congressional Delegation Members for Urgently Needed Medicare Payment Reform
MSSNY has been urging members of the New York Congressional Delegation to sign onto a bipartisan letter from Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), offering several potential permanent legislative solutions to long-term problems plaguing the Medicare payment system for physicians and the patients they treat.
Specifically, the letter urges Congressional Leadership to move legislation that will provide physicians and other clinicians with a permanent, annual inflationary update in Medicare equivalent to the Medicare Economic Index (MEI), prevent implementation of a 2.8 percent payment cut scheduled for 2025, enact targeted reforms to statutory budget neutrality requirements, and provide physicians with a payment update reflective of inflationary pressures. These changes will also provide greater certainty and stability for clinicians serving Medicare beneficiaries and ensure greater access for patients to the best care.
So far, nearly 100 members of the US Congress have signed on to the letter, including the following list of NY Congressional Delegation members:
- Anthony Garbarino (R- Patchogue)
- Anthony D’Esposito (R-Island Park)
- Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island)
- Adriano Espaillat (D-Manhattan/Bronx)
- Mike Lawler (R-Pearl River)
- Marcus Molinaro (R-Binghamton)
- Brandon Williams (R-Syracuse)
- Nick Langworthy (R-Jamestown)
- Joe Morelle (D-Rochester)
- Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove)
- Paul Tonko (D-Schenectady)
- Ritchie Torres (D-Bronx)
MSSNY will continue its outreach to lawmakers and provide updates on the issue as it develops. Moreover, this week, MSSNY President Dr. Jerome Cohen and Executive Vice-President Dr. Tom Lee visited various New York Congressional offices to urge passage of legislation to provide a long-term Medicare payment remedy, in conjunction with their participation in a strategy meeting with the American Medical Association and other state medical associations. Several county medical society physician leaders have also initiated meetings with their local representatives.
