Health Advisory: Risk of Vibrio Vulnificus Infections

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) is issuing a crucial reminder to healthcare providers regarding Vibrio vulnificus, a potentially life-threatening pathogen. Vibrio vulnificus can lead to severe wound infections and sepsis, posing significant health risks. Providers must consider the possibility of Vibrio vulnificus when encountering individuals with severe wound infections or sepsis, whether or not wound infections are present. This is particularly relevant for those who report exposure to raw or undercooked seafood or salt/brackish waters, notably from the Long Island Sound. As of July 1st, the Connecticut Department of Health has reported three Vibrio vulnificus cases, including one fatality. NYSDOH is currently investigating one fatality associated with Vibrio vulnificus in 2023. Healthcare providers are strongly encouraged to obtain wound and blood samples from individuals showing signs of sepsis or wound infections with suspected Vibrio vulnificus infection. Timely reporting of all vibriosis cases to the local health department (LHD) in the patient’s residence area is paramount.
