MSSNY Policies

The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) recognizes that physician professional responsibilities require life-long education through practice-based learning and improvement, appropriate to the individual physician’s needs.

To assist in this goal, MSSNY conducts an intrastate voluntary accreditation program for organizations providing continuing medical education (CME).  MSSNY, through its recognition as an intrastate Accreditor by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, evaluates and recognizes organizations as accredited providers whenthe CME Program sunstantially complies with the Essentials and Standards.  MSSNY seeks to assure that CME addresses competence and performance gaps while connecting current practice to best practice and to assist physicians in identifying CME activities that meet these standards.

The development of CME is significantly affected by specific elements of organization, structure, method and evaluation. These elements are presented in the Essential Areas and their Elements. The principles described in these essentials and standards are the guidelines used by MSSNY survey teams in evaluating the quality of education efforts. Institutions applying for initial or re-accreditation will be based on these principles. These guidelines are reviewed periodically.

The MSSNY accreditation system exists to accredit providers whose missions are to educate physicians within their local area - New York and contiguous states.
