NY Medical Society Statement on Proposed Aetna/CVS Merger
Statement attributed to: Charles Rothberg, MD, President, Medical Society of the State of New York
"The proposed purchase of Aetna by CVS, as reported in the Wall Street Journal, demands an immediate investigation by the federal Departments of Justice and Federal Trade Commissions. Physicians and patients are already powerless to push back against barriers imposed by market dominant health insurance behemoths. Insurance giants have a history of interfering with needed medical care by limiting patients' choice of doctors and creating new burdensome pre-authorization rules. At the same time, corporate pharmacy interests are increasingly trying to take away prescribing and health care decision-making authority from physicians, which is an outrage. Pharmacies should stick to their business of filling prescriptions— not prescribing them. Before these proposed pharma-insurance conglomerations move forward, these companies need to prove how they will improve patients' healthcare, not obstruct it."
