NY Medical Society Calls for Critical Review of Proposed CVS Takeover of Aetna
Statement attributed to: Charles Rothberg, MD, President, Medical Society of the State of New York
“The front door to health care should be a physician’s front door— not an insurer’s and definitely not a store.
New York’s physician community once again calls upon the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice, as well as state regulators across the country, to make a critical review as to the potential impact of the proposed CVS takeover of Aetna. We are very concerned about significant adverse implications for patients if this immense merger goes forward. The possibility of even more burdensome and excessive prior authorization barriers for prescription medications needed by our patients, combined with further marginalization of many community pharmacies and community physicians that our patients depend upon is an equation for disaster.
Health care decisions should be the result of discussions between a patient and their doctor, without interference from a behemoth corporation.”
Founded in 1807, the Medical Society of the State of New York is the state's principal non-profit professional organization for physicians, residents and medical students of all specialties.
