IN MY DEFENSE: THE PERSPECTIVE OF A PHYSICIAN IN A MALPRACTICE SUIT

Dr. John Lombardo, MLMIC’s Chief Medical Officer, shares his challenging experience of being sued for medical malpractice as a practicing physician. He details the entire process and its emotional toll, from the daunting moment he received legal papers to the immense relief that accompanied a final verdict ruling in his favor.  He says he hopes that normalizing communication on medical malpractice lawsuits will help fellow physicians in similar situations.

At the end of this presentation, the participants should be able to:

·       Describe how a medical malpractice lawsuit begins, and the feelings that a defendant physician can experience.

·       Explain the purpose of the deposition and the best way to handle a plaintiff attorney’s questions.

·       Review the trial process and the emotional impact that it can have on the defendant physician.

·       Outline strategies that can help support the defendant physician during the litigation process.
