Public Health Thank You Day, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

In recognition of Public Health Thank You Day, I give you my heartfelt thanks for your unending dedication and true commitment to the work of your health department and the health and well-being of New Yorkers. In this week of Thanksgiving, I remain grateful for your heroic efforts here in the Empire State, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has been a great privilege for me to work in partnership with our local health departments. You are the face of public health for New Yorkers. I appreciate your compassion, ingenuity, and problem solving to address the many public health challenges we’ve faced and your steadfast and expert capacity to manage multiple competing priorities. I admire how you continue to make progress on our core public health work, even as we continue the fight against this devastating COVID-19 pandemic.

I hope you take time on this Thanksgiving to reflect on your accomplishments over the past year and appreciate the amazing role public health has played in reducing illness and saving lives. Thanks to your bold and unwavering service, New Yorkers are safer and healthier. Millions of adolescents and adults, and now children, have received the COVID-19 vaccine, understand the importance of wearing masks and maintaining physical distance, and can look forward to a day when COVID-19 is no more dangerous than seasonal influenza.

Thanks to your public health service, New Yorkers are engaging in more healthy behaviors, enjoying greater access to clean drinking water, and working together to end the HIV and hepatitis epidemics, and so much more. Of course, there is work that remains to be done and progress to be made. I remain confident that thanks to your resilience, innovation, and resourcefulness together we will bring COVID-19 under control and make further gains for all New Yorkers to achieve their optimum health, productivity, and well-being.

Thank you again for your service. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving!
