INTRODUCTION
The Medical Society of the State of
New York (MSSNY) recognizes that the professional responsibility of
physicians requires continuous learning through their careers,
appropriate to the individual physician’s needs.
To assist in this goal, MSSNY
conducts an intrastate voluntary accreditation program for organizations
providing continuing medical education (CME). MSSNY through its
recognition as an intrastate Accreditor by the Accreditation Council for
Continuing Medical Education evaluates and grants recognition to
organizations whose CME program substantially complies with the
Essentials and Standards. MSSNY seeks to assure the quality of CME and
to assist physicians in identifying CME programs that meet these
standards.
The development of CME is
significantly effected by certain elements of organization, structure
and method. These elements are presented in the
Essential Areas and
their Elements. The principles described in these essentials and
standards are the guidelines to be used by the survey teams in
evaluating the quality of education efforts. Institutions applying for
initial or re-accreditation will be based on these principles. These
guidelines are flexible and will be reviewed periodically.
MSSNY accreditation system exists to
accredit providers whose missions are to educate physicians locally,
within the state or surrounding states in which they are located.
The information on
this site will assist organizations in reviewing the Essential Areas and
in gaining an understanding of the accreditation process.
